Open Question: Replacing ceramic tiles in the bathroom....what is the best way?
We had our baths redone about 3 years ago. Unfortunately, we are finding that shortcuts were taken and things were not done as well as we would have liked. We interviewed and asked around too. But where we are now is: some tiles have arrive up from around the one toilet. When we took it off we found it had leaked and the floor underneath was wet. Now we are drying that out and debating replacing the toilet. The seal at the base of the toilet is every messed up. Did notice that there is a hairline close the upper part of the toilet...doesn't seem that that would cause any leak...but the re modelers probably did it and hid it from us. Plus we noticed this..when you take the tank off the toilet and look down into the hole the ceramic below the hole has a big open crack in it..doesn't look to me it is supposed to be there...uneven crack not a smooth edge. Some of the tiles came up and it wasn't a wet area...why do you suppose? Any advice? We have to do this ourselves...stock market has dictated that. Now we are drying it out, considering a new toilet and going to buy new tile to reapply. Any advice appreciated.

Open Question: Is there any replacement for Thermal boards for under-tile electrical heating?
I've bought electrical heating mat kit to put in the new kitchen, but although a layer of the cement floor has been taken out - it is still not deep enough to put the thermal boards and mats and tiling on - or the flooring in the kitchen will be higher then everywhere else and being an open plan - this is not going to look good.. Does anyone know if there is any substitute for the Thermal boards? Something you can just roll out.. Or pour in.. Because I guess there is very little point laying electrical thermal mats directly on the concrete floor - every the heat will go right into the ground.. Although it does say in the product description "produced with PTFE insulated heating elements and a 100% earth screen" - I have no idea what that means.. Thanks! Oh, here is the link of what I mean, just in case I am not making myself clear: Thermal boards: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Underfloor-heating-tilebacker-board-boards/dp/B0010XIS46/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid=1227094682&sr=1-13 thermal mat kit: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Electric-underfloor-heating-150w-1500W/dp/B0011FD1YK/ref=sr_1_34?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid=1226656675&sr=8-34

Open Question: Valuation of the property?
I am planning to buy a flat in London which is a Victorian conversion. The valuation report revealed the following problems: - On the main roof, a number of slipped and damaged slates were noted together with clipped slates indicating previous failures and repairs. Deterioration of the bedding mortar to the ridge tiles was also noted and moss growth. Estimate costs £750 - The chimney pots to the main stack are leaning indicating inadequate bedding. Estimate costs £250. - Cracked and weathered mortar noted to flashing. Estimate costs £250. - Inadequate from guttering that should be checked - Terracotta air bricks ahve inadequate ventilation . Estimated costs £500 - Back garden door has some softness and might need to be replaced. Estimated costs £250. 1. Do you know how serious these problems are and especially the first one with the problem on the roof? 2. How much would it cost to fix the tiles on the roof ( the costs here rough estimates). 3. Can I negotiate the price of the flat and much should I ask to reduce the price?

Open Question: Suggestions for living/dining room colors?
I just bought a townhouse. One of the things that charmed me when I first saw it was the marble fireplace with white wood border and turquoise paint over, and with taupe color on both sides (same wall as fireplace). The other walls are also taupe except for one wall of the dining room (which is open to the sunken living room) which is turquoise (like the wall over the fireplace). So much taupe in the relax of the first floor is a little dark, and the turquoise in the dining room clashes with the bluish gray tile in the kitchen. So I was wondering if it would be a good idea to paint the turquoise wall in the dining room a cranberry color and maybe one of the living room walls a creamy beige to give some relief to the mostly taupe areas. Or is this too much color for the walls? What would you suggest?

Open Question: Partial Bathroom Remodel?
I am doing a partial bathroom remodel (paint, re-tile bath and floor, replace mirror, vanity and fixtures and new lighting). I will be doing most of the work myself but I need to know in what order should the process start and end. I know the floors should be last but what about the bath re-tile? Should the fixtures go on first then the tile or vice versa? Any books or websites that offer easy to follow assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for your help!

I'm doing a backsplash myself w/meshbacked tiles and I have finished one wall...but on the side, the mosaic is just free standing, in other words, it's not backed up against anything. So the tiles are just there with no smooth edge or anything. Do I use caulk? How do I make it look more finished?

Open Question: I had a dream that death came after me...?
I had this dream that we were in the desert and there was this zoo-type thing. I went down to it but every time i tried to open the doorknob, it was made of light and my hand just sank through it. i was told by the man who invented the doorknobs that he trusted me so i was permitted to open it, i had to use a needle and thread. so i threaded a needle (i had the needle, but i ran around randomly asking for thread until a very nice lady in every maroony-mauve colors gave me a peice of white thread) and i held the point where the needle joins the thread in the light. then i was able to grab the doorknob and open it. when i got inside, there was a guy (he looked just like Peter Petrelli from Heroes, except he nice of looked wild like he had rabies or something) in a cage. he was gnashing his teeth at me and stuff. the second cage was empty, and just around the corner, I peeked around and saw Death. Death looked just like a dementor, but was perfectly still, sitting cross-legged on a tile floor. when i saw death, i wasn't me, i was the person who was with me. I was my caretaker/pal/orsomething. i went out and grabbed me (suddenly i was me again) and my pal said, "we have to receive out of here. NOW." I didn't know why but my pal did. i stepped outside and suddenly we were in a desert. i went over to pat a camel. then i was my caretaker/pal again and i was telling the guy who was in charge of the zoo (Mohinder from Heroes) what was wrong. there was a Peter Petrelli out there too but he was normal. Mohinder asked me what was wrong and I said Death was inside. Mohinder asked why that was such a bad thing and i told him "Death once told us, 'I will arrive after you. I will not cease until you are dead and gone, and then I will rule'." i didnt know how i knew it but i knew it was true. Mohinder looked scared and Peter did too. suddenly I was Mohinder. I left the caretaker/pal chatting with Peter and went into the room where death was. i pulled off his arms and torso from his legs. i pulled off his head and shoved them every below a bench (as it turns out death was made of cardboard.) then I ran outside into the desert and said that it wasn't death. the companion/pal lady was over with Me-who-was-not-me (she WASN'T me, she was tall and blond and pretty T_T) Me-who-was-Mohinder said "Death" wasn't really death. but me-who-was-Mohinder was still scared. then Peter Petrelli said, "but if that wasn't death, then who was?" then, as i watched from the sidelines (i guess i was some sort of spirity thing here,) the clay sphynx-shaped throne that Peter Petrelli was sitting on swallowed him till every we saw was his feet. one of his shoes came off, then he was swallowed completely. That was Death who swallowed Peter. The whole time peter and Mohinder were talking i was being slowly pulled backwards and then i was in Me-who-was-not-me again (blond girl) i was running and running, and i turned to go back into the zoo. I just knew that if i made it to where fake-death was, below the bench, i would be safe. just before i was about to turn the corner into the tiny hallway and safety, two hands covered my mouth. their fingernails were sooo ugly the ends were flat and the tips were slightly yellow, not white. They were big hands, too, and strong. they were a womans hands though. she led me up to the second cage. then I became the caretaker/pal and i saw that the first cage was empty. I also saw that the wild Peter petrelli-clone was in the second cage. Death was leading a struggling me-who-was-not-me into the cage to be killed by wild peter petrelli-clone.i ran towards me, but then the hands got me too. I looked around for Real Death, but the second cage door was close and the me-wh-was-not-me was screaming and hitting the cage door and trying to climb out while the wild peter-clone slowly approached. the real peter was dead, stiff as a board and propped up against the wall. Mohinder-me was behind Death who was holding Caretaker-Me. although i couldnt look him, i knew he was there. then the Deaths hands that held me so tightly let go, i knew she had been forced to let go. I couldnt look him, but i knew that Mohinder-me was tied up, gagged and forced to the floor. the last thing i saw was blond-me about to climb over the gate through the tiny gap between ceiling and fence to freedom, but wild peter-petrelli-clone got me-who-was-not-me first. he dragged me-who-was-not-me down by the ankles, screaming. i sensed Mohinder-me break loose of the rope that tied his ankles and the hands let go of me again and everything went white, then black, then i woke up. WHAT THE HECK DID THAT MEAN???

We called our landlord two weeks ago to deal with the problem and he still hasn't done anything about it. I want to know what are the effects of living with mold in your home?? And can the landlords receive in trouble for not doing anything about it?? I need to know what can be done about this situation!!! My roommates and I feel that we should not have to pay for this months rent because none of us are even staying here until the mold situation is dealt with.

Open Question: 6 year old neutered male keeps peeing on the carpet?
Ok my boyfreind has a 6 year old neutered male cat and for some reason he has an attraction to plush carpets. A few years back we changed the carpet in his apartment from an indoor/outdoor to a more plush carpet and his cat kept going to the bathroom on it. We cleaned it then with Natures Miricle but his care was even more attracted to that and peed every over where ever the nature miricle touched. This was such a big pee stain (almost the length of my height and the width of a tiny child) that we had to tear it up and leave the wood floor down. one time he peed on my puff down winter coat. Then recently I moved in and we put down a toss carpet which was almost as evenly plush and he peed every over that too. So that went into the trash. Then this morning when I was in the shower my boyfriend left the bathroom door open after brushing his teeth and his cat peed on the brand new Plush bathmat. Diferent fibers from the other carpets but just as soft. He doesnt pee on the old indoor/outdoor carpet that is still in the bedroom or hallway, not on the bed, not on the tile, and not on the wood floor. We dont know what is causing this behavior but I need it to cease. It is driving me bonkers. I can't do anything nice to the apartment. I have only had to deal with my good cat NEVER using the home as a toilet ...except when he was mad at me he would potto in the tub which he believed was his luxury litter box, but thats easily taken care of! What can I do to make him cease? We have tried catching him and scolding him and the whole spray bottle technique. Please tell me someone knows where this behavior is comming from. Could it be the texture below his paws??? It cant be the scent because the first carpet came from one place, the other came from biglots, the coat was mine and smelled like me and he doesnt potty on anything else of mine ever, and the bath mat came from bed bath and beyond... so they every have diferent scents. Please help me! Hes been peeing on carpets since He lived at his dads, then still when he moved, and still now since I moved in

“My Squalid First Grade Art Teacher” When my mom woke me up, I was so excited I almost peed my pants. After running to the potty, I began getting dressed. Today was one of the most special days of the year: the first day of school. The bus pulled up and I climbed into it and sat down with a group of my friends from last year, who every looked as nervous and eager as I was. We arrived at school and met our new teacher. None of us could have predicted how much I would hate that year. I entered first grade a bright-eyed, innocent, six year old. The second day of school was dedicated to getting us used to the transition from kindergarten. On this second day, September 6, 1999, I began a weekly art class. We were every looking forward to starting the class and meeting the teacher. She was the opposite of how we, the adorable, naïve, little kids we were, had expected. I believe that if I met this person for the first time today, I would probably break out into a icy sweat and wet myself, but then, I simply smiled and chanted good morning along with my classmates. Just the thought of her still makes me shudder. Back then, I thought nothing of the fact that she was a very scary lady. She had thin, wispy hair, revolting, pasty-white skin, and long, yellow fingernails perfect to eat the skin of innocuous little first-graders with. I also don’t recall the lakes of flame or lightning bolts that must have been gift in the background at this time. How I missed these features, I have no idea. When we started class, it began as a very enjoyable experience. We were simply told to copy the still life drawing on the board. A few moments later I felt her warm, rancid breath down my neck. She crumpled up my drawing and told me to start over. I almost started bawling. I mean, here I was, six years old and trying my best. I’ll bet it wasn’t even that bad for first grade. Maybe she just didn’t like me. Anyway, soon after that, I turned to my neighbor and quietly asked him a question. I’m sure it was something along the lines of “Could you pass me the crayons?” or possibly like “Are you using those scissors?” It was just a simple question. This is when I noticed the teacher crossing to the back of the room where I sat with my supplies. I was instantly worried since I had already gotten on her bad side. My fears were confirmed as my gentle eyes met her burning glare. I simply wanted to curl up into a little ball and die. She grabbed my arm tightly and pulled me from my seat as though I wouldn’t have responded if she had asked me to stand on my possess. She pushed me to the front of the room and threw me to the floor behind the piano. “You can sit here now since you can’t seem to keep your mouth close” she snarled angrily at me as she thrust my art supplies to the floor and told me to receive to work. From that moment on, every time we had art I was instructed to sit behind the piano on the icy tile floor and aggressively warned not to make a peep. That year, I was also the only one not to have a project in the art fair held at school, simply because I couldn’t look her instructions on the board from my place on the floor. Have you ever harbored a deep resentment for someone because they did something unfair to you? I must fall below the category of people who hold a grudge because I will never forget the wicked lady who has haunted my childhood. I still believe her to be a malicious, vile, devilish old bat, even though she is probably dead now.

My fiancé and I just got a home together, and it seems that the last owners had NO taste.. I won't start on the relax of the home, but the bathroom... ugh, every the grout between the tiles, as well as every the pipes, and a lovely inch thick border around the sink, has been painted silver.. That may appeal to some people, but my partner and I hate it! I was just wondering if we'd be able to paint it white again? Are there specific kinds of paint to colour grout, and would a white work over the top of a silver surface? Thanks :]

Open Question: I need help on my homework?
This is the story: The infamous volcano of Mt. Pelee looms over the village of St. Pierre on the French Caribbean Island of Martinque. This sleepy little village shows little of the grandeur of turn-of-the-century St. Pierre, which was a vibrant colonial city, known to European tourists as the "Paris of the West Indies." With its red-tiled cottages, rambling streets, and tropical vegetation, this prosperous little city was reowned for its beauty. In the official 1894 census, the population of St. Pierre was around 20,000. Although most were native Martiniquans, the wealth and political power were controlled largely by Creoles and a few French colonial officials and civil servants. No one at the time could have predicted the horror that was to descend on this tropical paradise with the reawakening of Mt. Pelee in the spring of 1902. The violent eruption of Mt. Pelee on May 8, 1902 generated a pyroclastic flow that rapidly moved down the River Blanche to destroy the tiny city of St. Pierre on the Island of Martinique. The pyroclastic flow killed over 25,000 people. Here are the 4 questions: 1. Where is Mt. Pelee? 2. What is the tourist nickname for St. Pierre? 3. Which country is credited for the colonization of St Pierre? 4. How many people died in the eruption?

Open Question: Does anyone else when walking count to 5 over and over and count steps you go up?
I also find myself counting random things like ceiling tiles etc. While i am counting in a non home environment I am also constantly scanning for danger and analyse every situation for danger and prepare actions if certain dangers appear or look if they could appear. Someone told me it is something to to with OCD but i haven't been able to find a good answer searching on OCD websites. They every say about washing hands too much or checking the door is locked. I never do that. It is just the counting and the scanning for future events. I'm so sorry i must sound like a right weirdo.

Open Question: I'm about to do my first independent tiling project. How much should I be charging? (In Saskatchewan)?
As I said, I'm about to do my first side project by myself. I am tiling 64 square feet of flooring and 70 square feet of wall in a bathroom using 12x12 porcelain tile. They are supplying the materials. I am in Saskatchewan, how much should I be charging per square foot. Also, any suggestion on what to go with for the subfloor? Currently deciding between exterior grade plywood or cement backerboard. Thanks in advance.

Open Question: How to turn a large image into tiles with ease?
Yeah, the question is pretty much what the title suggests. Does anybody know of a way to turn a big image (of dimensions; 2560 x 2880 pixels) into a big quantity of tiles? What I mean is I am aiming for the 2560x2880 image to be split up into tiles that are 32x32 pixels or *possibly* higher dimensions. I've tried googling and came up with nothing useful, and of the ones I found didn't work or said that it would take up too much memory [=P]. I've tried the following: Image clip Image Mapping and Slicing Utilities Image Magick Image Cutter Map Cruncher TileMage Image Splitter By the way, I have photoshop 7 if there is a function in that which can tile my image for me. Future thankyou for any answers [cause i'm not expecting every too many tbh]
